Ofcom calls for input on UK broadcast regulatory changes

The regulator will consider feedback alongside market developments and the government's decision around future TV distribution

Ofcom has launched a call for input over broadcasting regulation.

The UK communications regulator is currently implementing the Media Act which aims to reform and simplify the legislative and regulatory framework governing the broadcast industry.

With much current regulation designed for linear, scheduled broadcasting, Ofcom has identified the need for it to be updated to meet the needs of modern audiences and industry stakeholders. As announced in its review of Public Service Media, the regulator is now seeking views areas where simplification could support growth and innovation across the sector.

With a focus on three areas: licensing, advertising and content standards, Ofcom is inviting evidence on ways in which business is affected by current regulation, and views from across the sector on where it may no longer necessary.

Ofcom said it is “essential that regulation does not limit innovation or prevent investment” adding that it must provide for flexible industry responses to future changes in the market.

Responses must be submitted by 15 January ahead of an updated roadmap indicating forward plans.
