The German Football League (DFL) is looking to reassign media rights in Spring 2020, according to DFL CEO Christian Seifert.
In an interview with German newspaper Handelsblatt, Seifert said that media rights make up as much as 50 per cent of the turnover of a football club, noting the increased use of mobile phones and tablets for watching highlights but adding that the emphasis will always be on the live game.
According to the DFL Economic Report 2019, German professional football reached a record turnover of €4.42 billion in the 2017/18 season, with the media contract contributing 65 per cent growth.
Seifert added: “In England, the media revenue market has slowed in football, with sales down 10 per cent, even though 20 per cent more games have hit the market … That should make us cautious.”
