Sony introduces new shotgun microphone for film, drama and documentaries

The microphone measures 176 mm (about 6.93 in) in length and weighs 102 grammes

Sony is launching the ECM-778 shotgun microphone featuring a newly developed microphone capsule, brass acoustic tube, and a specifically designed electronic circuit board for better sound quality.

Designed for film, drama and documentaries, the mono high-resolution microphone can be fixed to a boom pole or directly attached to compatible cameras.

The microphone measures 176 mm (about 6.93 in) in length and weighs 102 grammes. It can be used with external audio input devices, recording equipment, and camera systems equipped with XLR terminals, said Sony.

With high-resolution support capturing frequencies beyond the audible range of 20 kHz, the ECM-778 enables clear and spatially expansive audio recording of voices, ambient sounds, nature sounds. The microphone’s acoustic tube design uses sound wave interference effects to consistently suppress sound from the sides and rear across the entire frequency range.

The microphone can be used with two kinds of wind screen. The foam-type wind screen is suitable for indoor use or environments with minimal wind. The fur-type wind screen is ideal for outdoor use or windy conditions. Using the appropriate wind screen for different environments ensures clear audio recording, said Sony.
