Sky has revealed it managed to reduce carbon emissions by 70 per cent during its coverage of the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in September.
The match, dubbed #GameZero, was the first elite football match with a zero carbon footprint.
Sky has now revealed the match achieved net zero carbon emissions, with the TV production crew reducing their emissions by 70 per cent versus its 2019 baseline.
This was done by having more production staff working remotely, using green biodiesel in production vehicles and for the on-location generator, and sourcing local crew and ensuring the channel’s pundits and presenters travelled to the game “in the most sustainable way possible”.
The overall footprint for #GameZero totalled 861.9t CO2e, with the TV production contributing 4.1t CO2e, less than one per cent of the total.
Jonathan Licht, managing director at Sky Sports said: “We hope that Game Zero is the first of many major net zero carbon sporting events and will inspire long-term change. At Sky Sports, we’re committed to minimising our impact on the environment and to use the power of sport for good.”
