Mobile is “go-to device” for streaming

Usage up in France, Germany and the UK

Mobile is the go-to device for streaming, App Annie’s State of Mobile 2020 report has found.

Comparing the use of entertainment apps between 2017 and 2019, the study revealed that usage in Germany grew by 30 per cent, UK by over 40 per cent and France by 60 per cent.

App Annie cited “the ever-growing adoption of video streaming apps on mobile devices” and the standardisation of “offline mode” as reasons for the uptake.

The report also revealed a 25 per cent overlap between iPhone Netflix users and Disney Plus subscribers in the US. Netflix and Hulu overlap doubled between 2017 and 2019 to reach 20 per cent.

“TikTok saw the greatest two-year growth in cross-app usage of Netflix at over 135 per cent,” App Annie noted, “indicating that competition in the video streaming space is heating up not only by traditional companies launching standalone streaming services, but from social media companies carving new mobile-first consumption pathways.”
