Telecom Italia is launching a 4K set-top box based on the Android operating system.

Available in June, the box will come with advanced navigation and a DVB-T2 tuner.

Customers will be given access to 4K content from Google, including access to online videos, news and games available on Google Play.

The box is closely integrated with the operator’s VoD service TIMvision, which boasts a catalogue of over 6,000 titles, including feature films, sporting events and serials.

Alongside 4K capabilities, it possesses Bluetooth-enabled voice search remote control and access to terrestrial channels via DVB-T2. Users will also be able to use Google Cast to broadcast entertainment apps from Android, IOS, Windows and Mac devices on the TV screen.

Daniela Biscarini, head of Telecom Italia, said, A new frontier in digital entertainment available on your home TV screen has been crossed in Italy.

“This initiative is the result of an important collaboration with Google which allows us to offer TIMvision customers a new experience combining content and web in an unprecedented way.

“The project is part of TIM’s strategy to disseminate innovative services and confirms our role as a technological enabler, with the aim of bringing our customers increasingly into touch with good quality streamed content and the new ways of enjoying it made possible by super-fast broadband networks.”
