Ofcom approves iPlayer functionality changes in interim report

Proposed extension to availability of Box Sets still subject to a PIT

Ofcom has allowed the BBC to make a ‘limited number’ of proposed changes to the iPlayer on an interim basis.

On 2nd November, Ofcom directed the BBC to conduct a public interest test (PIT) in order to assess the value and potential impact of its proposals on other broadcasters.

Designed to allow the iPlayer to compete with other VoD services, the proposed changes include the addition of Box Sets to be available for an extended time period, as well as functionality changes to enhance the user experience.

In the interim period, Ofcom has ruled that the BBC must not make a programme available on the iPlayer for longer than the standard period, however it may implement the functionality changes.

Ofcom’s final interim directions are available here.
