HBO claims 97 per cent increase in Game of Thrones streaming

Sunday's episode accounted for the biggest ever night of streaming activity for HBO

HBO says its streaming service HBO Now saw a 97 per cent increase in viewers streaming the first episode of the new season of Game of Thrones, compared to the first episode of season seven.

The company said Sunday’s episode also saw a 50 per cent increase of streaming views compared to the final episode of season seven.

It says Sunday accounted for the biggest ever night of streaming activity for HBO.

Overall, the season eight premiere drew an audience of 17.4 million viewers across HBO’s linear channel, HBO Go and HBO Now, with 11.8 million of those viewers tuning in to the linear channel.

In comparison, the season seven premiere attracted a figure of 16.1 million total viewers, including 10.1 million who watched on the linear channel and the rest watching on DVR and streaming.
