Nokia launches legal action against Paramount over streaming patents

The lawsuit states that Paramount+, Pluto TV, BET+ and other streaming services have violated Nokia's patent rights in technology related to encoding and decoding streaming video

Nokia has launched legal action in the United States against Paramount, which it alleges has infringed several patents covering video streaming technology.

The lawsuit states that Paramount+, Pluto TV, BET+ and other streaming services have violated Nokia’s patent rights in technology related to encoding and decoding streaming video.

Nokia said it believes Paramount has infringed 13 of its streaming technology patents, including video frame grouping, spatial prediction, error detection, picture buffering, and secure dynamic authority delegation.

The company added that Paramount has benefited from its innovations, but has refused to enter into a licence agreement.

According to the official documents, Nokia first informed Paramount of its extensive portfolio of patents via an email dated September 29th, 2022. Since then, the two companies have been negotiating but have failed to reach an agreement.
