Bundesliga aims for more free-to-air matches

Chief executive Christian Seifert discusses domestic media rights

More Bundesliga matches will be shown live free-to-air in the 2021-22 season, the German Football League chief executive has said.

Christian Seifert told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag that the next cycle of domestic media rights deals would see the number of live free-to-air matches increase by three to nine each season.

On top of the three current live Bundesliga matches per season, public service broadcaster ZDF holds non-exclusive live rights to the German Supercup and two relegation play-off matches.

BildĀ reported that the two relegation play-off matches, along with the opening match from the second tier, would be added to the live free-to-air inventory.

The report also suggested that Amazon and Deutsche Telekom could seek to acquire Bundesliga rights, having recently acquired UEFA Champions League and 2024 UEFA European Championship rights respectively in Germany.
