Toyota unveils Olympics telepresence robot

Allows people physically unable to attend the Olympics to experience the games virtually

The Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has unveiled a “telepresence robot” for the 2020 Olympics, offering users a near-lifesize virtual presence.

The T-TR1 features a large screen, a 360-degree camera and multiple 3D-sensing systems, including at least two depth cameras and a lidar at the base.

T-TR1 will be able to move fast enough to keep up with a person walking briskly, allowing those physically unable to attend the Olympics to virtually experience the games alongside other people.

Toyota has yet to release details of the robot but is expected to address latency-sensitivity given the connectivity issues that occur in large crowds.
