Sony Cinema Line upgrade keeps Laughing Around smiling

The West End podcast and live-production facility has upgraded its camera fleet to meet a boom in demand for content creation

Aiming to meet growth in demand from content creators, London-based podcast and live production venue Laughing Around has added a suite of Sony FX3 cameras, upgrading from its previous FX7 fleet.

Operating as a studio for hire, Laughing Around provides pre-planning, multi-camera production and post production services. Switching from podcasts to live gigs and back, the 300-capacity venue had a requirement for fast set-up and cameras that can be easily moved around the site.

Part of Sony’s Cinema Line family, the FX3 provides full-frame imaging in a body weighing 630g, and can be easily mounted or handheld by an operator. Featuring high sensitivity and 15+ stops of dynamic range, the FX3 enables high-quality content capture in extremely low light. Precision autofocus allows tracking of performers on stage while consistent colour matching accelerates post production, said the company.

Ryan Dutch, creative director at Laughing Around Studios, commented, “We’ve been Sony through and through since inception. It’s not just about the image quality on its own; it’s about how the cameras fit into your workflow.

“We need to be able to shoot with great quality without it taking over the room; without it disrupting any live events or action.”

The facility, which also offers live streaming, planning, camera work and delivery, uses Sony’s Monitor & Control app to coordinate and monitor multiple cameras, aiming to allow a multi-camera shoot to be run by a single operator.

Laughing Around has plans to expand its studio space, possibly adding a second site.
