Lucasfilm hires YouTuber who created Luke Skywalker deepfake

Video has been watched over two million times, and improves the VFX used to de-age Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker

Lucasfilm has confirmed it has hired a YouTuber, known as Shamook, who created a deepfake video of The Mandalorian’s climactic end to season two.

The video, released by Shamook in December, has been watched over two million times, and improves the VFX used to de-age Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

In a recent post, Shamook revealed he impressed the team at Lucasfilm so much, they’ve given him a job as a senior facial capture artist.

The company confirmed Shamook’s hiring to IndieWire, stating it’s always “on the lookout” for talented artists.

“Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and AI as a means to produce compelling visual effects work and it’s been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances,” added Lucasfilm.
