‘It took 20 years to get here’: Filmlight debuts media access tool

Nara can natively decode and playback a wide selection of media without the need to transcode to proxy files

Filmlight has unveiled a new tool to provide creatives with instant access to media from anywhere in the world.

Nara can natively decode and playback a wide selection of media without the need to transcode to proxy files. Its streaming engine minimises bandwidth usage while its advanced indexing system ensures rapid data retrieval, said the company.

Key features include a web UI, mirroring the facility’s security protocols; colour accurate streaming; a comprehensive back-end index; and codec support (including RAW camera formats, intermediate formats like EXR, as well as IMF, DCP and other complex deliverables).

Nara provides media professionals instant access to any media easily and efficiently,” Sam Lempp, head of business development – Nara, tells TVBEurope.

“We have brought Nara to market to tackle what we feel is a core problem in the M&E space. Professionals require access to secure and complex media at a moment’s notice, while maintaining security, flexibility and accuracy. Nara is providing exactly this.”

The tool allows facilities to maximise efficiency by providing instant search and find tools, as well as accurate, bandwidth-friendly streaming of any media file, irrespective of its encoding or format. “This allows users to seamlessly share and collaborate on the media at hand, without having to jump through the regular ‘workflow’ hoops that plague the industry today,” adds Lempp.

“Nara is leveraging code that is at the fundamental core of the FilmLight product estate, so you could say it took us 20 years to get here,” he continues.

“We have been gathering feedback and working in close collaboration with customers across the world for a while now – understanding their challenges with existing solutions in this space and developing and moulding Nara to address the industry’s needs.”
