TVBEurope is delighted to announce 3D Masters 2010, set for June 22 at BAFTA in London – replacing our HD Masters conference which was supported by SMPTE and BKSTS, writes Fergal Ringrose.

3D Masters 2010 aims to give you a thorough understanding of the technologies and techniques of broadcast 3D. Please place this event in your diary now: the third dimension is closer than you think!

3D is coming to TV in 2010. Not just as feature films via Blu-ray or live sports, but as a new production and delivery format for all programme genres. Final channel output may be limited at present but consumer electronics and pay TV broadcasters are betting that 3D is the next step in home entertainment.

BSkyB will lead the world with the launch of a dedicated 3D service this autumn but it is not alone. In Europe, Canal+ has signalled its intent as has Finnish broadcaster Welho and French cable operator Orange. In the US satellite platform DirecTV is to launch up to five 3D channels including those from ESPN and Discovery Networks.

3D is already where HD was five years ago, but it will require additional infrastructure, new investment and extra technology. With many broadcasters still planning investment in HD, shouldn’t they also be considering the implications of 3D before making their final investment – at least to future proof their plans? Or do they otherwise risk being left behind?

3D Masters 2010 – TVBEurope’s new event from the team that brought you the highly successful HD Masters conference – is intended to contribute to the education process. It will gather together leading exponents of 3D production in a one-day forum to exchange their knowledge with an audience of peers.

3D Masters 2010 will outline the core ‘best practice’ acquisition techniques for handling convergence before taking a step-by-step look at 3D workflow from acquisition and monitoring on set to post production. It will explain how the streams are handled in an outside broadcast situation, a studio gallery prior to transmission and in post production for editing, grade and mastering.

Since 3D services will, initially at least, be starved of content so the process of converting 2D into 3D will be vital to many broadcasters and this area will be put under the spotlight. The true production costs of 3D work will also be highlighted.

How are 3D signals routed from the OB truck or broadcaster to the home? How are they compressed and decoded on reception? What are the different types of screen and glasses combination? 3D Masters 2010 decodes the technology behind the heated debate on standards.
