Western Europe to double SVoD subscriptions between 2019-2025

Around 35 million subs will be added in 2020, driven by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Western Europe’s number of SVoD subscriptions is predicted to reach 191 million by 2025, more than double the 90 million recorded at the end of 2019.

According to Digital TV Research, around 35 million subs will be added in 2020, driven by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Netflix is expected to remain the most popular platform, with 68.49 million paying subscribers expected by 2025. However, the analysts predict that despite adding 25 million subs between 2019 and 2025, Netflix will lose market share.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Disney Plus will have a huge impact. However, we have downgraded Disney Plus since our last forecasts in April. After strong early take-up and based on its June results, subscriber growth will decelerate rapidly. We have increased our forecasts for the ‘other’ category due to the wave of launches due from the likes of Hulu, Paramount Plus and Peacock.”
