Ted Sarandos: AI needs to pass a very important test

Sarandos was speaking as part of Netflix's Q3 2024 earnings report, which saw the streamer add another 5.1 global subscribers

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has been discussing the impact of artificial intelligence on the media and entertainment industry, saying it has the potential to be the latest example of entertainment and technology working hand-in-hand.

Sarandos added that he feels it’s important for creators to be “very curious” about the new tools that are being developed using AI.

“But AI needs to pass a very important test,” Sarandos said. “Can it help make better shows and better films? That is the test and that’s what they’ve got to figure out.”

Sarandos added that any tool that can help enhance the quality of the streamer’s TV and films “is something that is going to actually help the industry a great deal”.

He was speaking to analysts as part of Netflix’s Q3 2024 earnings call. The streamer added 5.1 million paid subscribers to reach 282.72 million globally in the third quarter of the year, a year-on-year growth of more than 14 per cent. In EMEA, Netflix added over two million subscribers during the quarter.
