Swisscom to deliver ‘final mile’ of Patrouille des Glaciers via 5G

In what's being described as a European first, the company has collaborated with the Telecoms Department of the Swiss Army to equip the entire route of the race with 4G, and 5G capacity expansion over the first and the last kilometre

As part of its coverage of the Patrouille des Glaciers on April 20th, Swisscom will employ 5G to deliver a live stream from over 3,000 metres above sea level.

In what’s being described as a European first, the company has collaborated with the Telecoms Department of the Swiss Army to equip the entire route of the race with 4G, and 5G capacity expansion over the first and the last kilometre.

The live stream will be broadcast via 5G on blue TV, Canal9 and RTS. Swisscom’s dedicated race app will enable fans to follow the race live as well as see 360-degree images along the route.

Around three tonnes of material – base stations, antennas, repeaters and other telecommunications equipment – will be transported to the mountains by the Swiss Air Force before the race, said Swisscom.

The Patrouille des Glaciers is a ski mountaineering race organised every two years by the Swiss Armed Forces, in which military and civilian teams compete. It takes place in the south part of the canton of Valais below the summits of the Pennine Alps.
