Spanish broadcaster RTVE has launched a nine-month-long technical test of DVB-I, which aims to break down the barriers between the broadcast and broadband worlds from an end-user point of view.
DVB-I offers a means to integrate all television services—linear broadcast, linear and on-demand broadband services, OTT services over satellite—into one service layer that will also enable the discovery of DVB services over 5G.

RTVE is working with FORTA, the country’s association of public broadcasting networks, on the project.
The initiative is part of the European Regulation on Freedom of the Media, particularly Article 20 regarding prominence.
The Spanish pilot will involve broadcasters, consumer electronics manufacturers, broadcasting network operators, technology providers, and service providers, as well as the country’s National Commission on Markets and Competition and the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service.
The project will begin with establishing an implementation group, as well as gathering information on other European DVB-I pilots, said RTVE.
