Freeview: Smart TV ownership now at 74 per cent

Freeview says it's sold more than enough TVs to entertain the combined populations of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow

Freeview has announced it has sold almost 23 million TVs over the last ten years.

According to figures compiled by GFK PTV Panel, the UK’s biggest TV platform has sold more than enough TVs to entertain the combined populations of London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow. Over the past decade, smart TV ownership has risen from 11 per cent to 74 per cent, said the company.

Its smart platform, Freeview Play, is built into most new TVs, providing access to on-demand content, live channels and boxsets with no subscription necessary. Used in over 16 million UK homes, 40 per cent of homes with a TV use Freeview as their main service.

“Since launch, Freeview has continued to grow and bring the best of free TV into people’s homes.” said Owen Jenkinson, director of Freeview. “This new milestone cements the appetite for free, accessible TV in the UK as new players and channels continue to be added to the service every year at no cost to viewers.”
