France Télévisions has announced widespread 4K UHD distribution of this year’s French Open tennis championship.
Ultra High Definition (UHD) coverage of the tournament, which takes place at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, has previously only been available in localised areas. This year, the event will be widely available across France as a trial run for the forthcoming Paris Olympic Games. It marks the first time a large scale live event will be shown across the nation in UHD HDR over digital terrestrial television (DTT).
The broadcaster will share the TV rights for the 2024 tennis tournament with Amazon Prime Video, with its matches being shown on the recently launched France 2 UHD channel.
France 2 UHD has been progressively launched across the regions since January, with the aim of being available across the entire country in time for the Olympics. The channel is expected to be taken over by the majority of ISPs and Orange France has confirmed national coverage for the month of May over its IPTV network. SFR (part of Altice Group) will broadcast over its cable network,
France 2 UHD broadcasts in 4K UHD and HDR (HDR10) with 50 images per second. The channel’s programmes are upscaled to 4K, and audio is provided by E-AC3 and Dolby AC4 tracks.
