Brazil’s Globo tests 8K at Tokyo 2020

Globo partnered with Intel on the tests, with 8K HDR standard images reaching 33 million pixels

Japan’s NHK was not the only broadcaster to test 8K during Tokyo 2020, Brazil’s Globo also trialled 8K streams via its GloboPlay app on Samsung TV sets.

Both the Opening and Closing ceremonies as well clips from swimming, judo and table tennis and other sports were available in 8K.

Globo partnered with Intel on the tests, with 8K HDR standard images reaching 33 million pixels, 16 times more than Globo broadcasts on free-to-air TV and four times more than for programmes aired in 4K.

According to Intel, the test was the first time Tokyo 2020 content was available in 8K outside of Japan.

Globo has been working with NHK for the past decade to test 8K broadcasts, demonstrating the technology at both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics.

The broadcaster said it next intends to test 8K drama productions.
