Qatar-based sports TV channel Al Kass is installing an Avid workflow at its soon to be completed new location, in a multimillion dollar deal with the vendor. Testing is scheduled to begin this month and the facility is expected to be fully in use by January.

The deal includes 10 Avid ISIS 7000 32TB shared storage systems including the upgrade of four existing ISIS systems; one ISIS 2000; eight AirSpeed 5000 DNxHD 120 ingest servers; licenses of Interplay Central for remote working; licenses of Media Composer 7; a System 5-MC 24-fader mixing control surface and a Pro Tools HDX audio mixing and editing system.

Building upon its current Avid-based systems, the new workflow was developed to allow Al Kass to create, access and distribute content in its region, as well as to its international customer base. It also provides integration with technologies from third parties including EVS, Miranda, SGL and Telestream.

“Avid is proven and trusted in sports video production, and our additional investment will give us considerable operational efficiencies,” said Samer Younes, technical advisor at Al Kass. “In addition, their openness to third-party applications means we don’t have to worry about handling multiple file formats. We can concentrate on what we’re best at – delivering compelling content to audiences both in Qatar and to international broadcasters.” The Avid Professional Services team consulted on the project.

At IBC Avid has also launched S6, a new control surface for sound mixing, recording and editing (available in Q4); and ISIS 5500, an online shared storage system aimed at small- to mid-sized facilities (£19,400). The company also announced the formation of a Customer Association. Founding members of the executive board include Andreas Bereczky of ZDF, Dany Harrison of CBC/Radio-Canada, Fred Mattocks of CBC/Radio-Canada, Frank Governale, of CBS News, Ding Wenhua of CCTV and Paul Stevenson of ITV.
