French VoD subscriptions surge in 2017

Up 40 per cent this year

Subscriptions to VoD services in France have soared by 40 per cent in 2017 according to new figures from analytics company Mediametrie.

It suggests some 21 per cent of internet users in France subscribed to a VoD service, up from 15 per cent in 2016.

Mediametrie suggests the rise has been brought about by the popularity of Netflix as well as CanalPlay from Canal Plus Group and SFR Play from Altice. The report says that 44 per cent of subscribers watch content on their streaming services every day, a two per cent year-on-year increase.

It also found that 46 per cent of subscribers use SVoD services primarily for the breadth and variety of content being offered on these services. The most-watched content category in France is live-action series, ahead of animated series and films.

The analytics firm sees French viewers also value local content, with two thirds of SVoD viewers choosing to watch French productions.
