Netflix warns of generative AI risk

"If our competitors gain an advantage by using such technologies, our ability to compete effectively and our results of operations could be adversely impacted," warned Netflix

In a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Netflix has included a warning about the rise of generative artificial intelligence.

As part of its 10-K report, the streamer discussed new technological developments, including the development and use of generative artificial intelligence, are rapidly evolving.

“If our competitors gain an advantage by using such technologies, our ability to compete effectively and our results of operations could be adversely impacted,” warned Netflix.

“In addition, the use or adoption of new and emerging technologies may increase our exposure to intellectual property claims, and the availability of copyright and other intellectual property protection for AI-generated material is uncertain,” it added.

Generative AI is slowly gaining traction within the media industry. and is being used for creating images, text, and video.

Last year, the BBC warned that GenAI will continue to have a “significant impact” on how people work and their digital lives.
