BBFC allows Netflix to set own age ratings

Netflix's algorithm will apply ratings to all films and TV shows

Netflix and the BBFC have collaborated to allow the streaming service to set its own UK age ratings.

A new algorithm based on Netflix tags (such as violence and swearing) will apply age classifications to all films and TV shows on the platform.

The system will be tested in a year-long pilot. It marks the first time the BBFC has allowed a company to determine its own ratings.

The BBFC said it would “provide ongoing training and support to Netflix to ensure that quality standards do not slip.”

This follows the regulatory body’s findings that 80 per cent of parents were concerned about children seeing inappropriate content online, leading to recommendations for wider use of BBFC age classifications on online video.
