BBC, ITV, Channel 4 ‘in early talks to launch British streaming service’

NBC Universal also said to considering joining venture

The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have reportedly held discussions about launching a British streaming service to take on the likes of Amazon Prime and Netflix.

According to The Guardian, NBC Universal is also interested in joining the service.

The report says all options are on the table in the talks, which also included the BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Studios.

While the broadcasters are said to only be in early talks, it’s thought the on-demand platform would be partly positioned as a defender of the UK’s homegrown creative industries and offer domestic competition to the major US streamers.

The latest viewing figures from Barb show that Netflix now has 8.2 million UK subscribers compared to Amazon Prime Video’s 4.3 million.
