Norigin Media successfully tests 4K transcoding on linear TV platform

Trials took place in partnership with leading Scandinavian cable operator

Norwegian OTT and video company Norigin Media has successfully trialled 4K cloud origin services for live or linear TV channels on its transcoding platform, Cloudncoder.

According to Norigin Media, the formatting of 4K video requires effort to find the right balance between the adaptive bitrates within the transcoding profiles ahead of packaging in HLS or DASH formats. HEVC codec has been utilised to ensure bandwidth efficiencies for streaming distribution.

Cloudncoder offers a hosted TV platform for linear OTT services as well as support for multi-DRM, catch-up and DVR (digital video recording) ahead of a chosen content delivery network (CDN). The platform is used by the likes of Deutsche Telekom and local Scandinavian pay-tv operators.

“4K is still new to commercial deployments and there is a lack of tested solutions. At such an instance, Cloudncoder fills the need for quick deployments during this time” said Ajey Anand, CEO of Norigin Media.

He added: “We have seen all our customers upgrade linear channels to Full HD in the cloud and this is a natural step rather than investing in costly new encoding platforms ahead of a business case.”
