‘Skybrid power’: Sky develops clean energy generator for mobile production

The new mobile power unit has the potential to dramatically reduce emissions, said Sky, while helping to improve air quality and reduce noise

Sky has revealed details of a new clean energy system.

Aiming to deliver a zero-emission power source for film and TV production, engineers at Sky have developed a hybrid system based around a hydrogen fuel cell and sodium battery. In what the company called a first for the industry, the new unit provides reliable power with reduced noise levels and no fumes or carbon emissions.

Unlike traditional generators, the only by-product is water, which is then recirculated into the fuel cell system. The batteries contain no precious or toxic minerals and are safer an more recyclable than lithium alternatives, said the broadcaster.

Able to run on or off-grid, the power system aims to offer a flexible solution for mobile productions while helping to achieve sustainability goals.

Commenting, David Rhodes, executive chairman of Sky News, said, “We’re so proud to announce this clean-energy power unit—the first of its kind, capable of the biggest production challenges. Our people have been innovating in the field for more than three decades. Now, we’re filling a real gap for smarter, quieter and more sustainable production solutions. We’re excited about the trials ahead.”

Fiona Ball, group director, bigger picture and sustainability at Sky, said, “This new technology is a brilliant example of how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. We designed it to meet the real needs of production teams while helping us cut emissions and improve air quality. It’s a practical solution that supports our journey to a low-carbon world and shows what’s possible when we embed sustainability into everything we do.”

Trials are currently underway at Sky Studios’ Elstree facility.
