WDR chooses Dalet for on-demand

Dalet Digital Media Systems has announced that German public broadcaster Westdeustscher Rundfunk (WDR) has implemented a Dalet Enterprise Edition solution to produce on-demand video programmes for distribution via its online news services.

Deployed at WDR headquarters in Cologne, the Dalet Enterprise Edition system is used by the newly formed “Portal Redaktion” department which is responsible for the recording and interactive distribution of all WDR programmes. “We went with a Dalet Enterprise solution for its video production capabilities and seamless integration with our existing OpenMedia newsroom system. The Dalet Enterprise and OpenMedia combination provides a straightforward workflow with no duplication of efforts to achieve our goals,” commented Wolfgang Kaiser, head of investment planning and strategic project management.

“The increasing demand for interactive content introduces new production challenges for broadcasters. Dalet Enterprise Edition provides large organisations such as WDR with a modular solution that can help them address these new challenges by facilitating the integrating of legacy systems,” explained Michael Schueller, general manager, Dalet

Modular in design, the Dalet Enterprise Edition workflow integrates with the existing WDR OpenMedia newsroom computer system to automatically generate metadata for recorded material. The Dalet Video FIFO Recorder automatically records the main WDR studio programme feed, while the 10 regional studio programmes are captured using Dalet ASI-DVB-Recorders. Thanks to the Dalet Enterprise Edition web services API, programme associated metadata is dynamically retrieved from the OpenMedia newsroom computer system and automatically associated to ingest material managed by in the Dalet Enterprise Edition video production environment. On-demand programmes are edited and pushed along with metadata to the WDR online news portal in Adobe Flash Video VP6 file format.
