Kantar: VoD continues to grow globally, except in Great Britain

FAST is also growing, with services now active in more than a third of households

Kantar has released its latest Entertainment on Demand (EoD) data, providing an insight into the global video streaming landscape for the first quarter of 2024.

The marketing data and analytics company reported a continuing growth trend for video on demand (VoD) services. Household VoD penetration showed a quarter-on-quarter increase across nearly all tracked markets, with only GB marginally down on Q4 2023.

Apple TV+ was the fastest growing major subscription video on demand (SVoD) service in Q1, in terms of percentage subscriber growth, said the company. Netflix enjoyed strong growth in Europe and Australia, with Spain’s Movistar+, Joyn Plus+ in Germany and Australian sports streamer, Kayo, also reporting increases in paid subscriber share in their respective territories.

Free advertising supported streaming televison (FAST) is also growing, with services now active in more than a third of households across the area of study. Kantar said it expects this growth to continue throughout 2024.

Kantar’s Andrew Skerratt, global insights director, said: “These developments, coupled with Disney+’s exploration of ‘always on’ programming, highlight this everchanging landscape. With household preferences shifting just as quickly, there is a critical need for services to adapt in order to both sustain and expand their subscriber base.”
