New George RR Martin series to shoot in Ireland

The pilot for Nightflyers will shoot in Limerick

A new drama series based on a book by Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin will film at Limerick’s Troy Studios.

The series is an adaptation of Martin’s 1980 novella Nightflyers, a sci-fi drama set in space where people embark on an ill-fated journey to save the Earth from destruction.

Filming is expected to begin before the end of this year.

The project is being led by US network Universal Cable Productions, a subsidiary of NBC-Universal. It is believed the new series will provide around 500 jobs in the production area, with ancillary jobs in the region likely to follow once filming gets under way.

Troy Studios is located at the former Dell factory in the Castletroy area of Limerick. The 340,000-square foot facility is now Ireland’s largest production studio.

Game of Thrones already films in Northern Ireland, based at the Titanic Studios in Belfast.
