Sony has taken UK pre-orders for its latest F-series CineAlta 4K cameras, the PMW-F5 and PMW-F55, ahead of the cameras shipping in early 2013. Sony specialist dealer CVP has ordered 100 Sony PMW-F5 cameras (pictured) and Top-Teks has placed an initial order for 40 PMW-F5 and 20 PMW-F55 cameras. Dave Cheesman, sales manager Media Channel North, Sony Europe commented: “Sony is driving the 4K market and now widest range of 4K and large sensor cameras on the market.” The PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 use Sony’s newly developed XAVC codec. Launched in partnership with editing and post production companies including Adobe, AVID, Colourfront, Yoyotta and Filmlight, the open codec represents a step forward in the 4K for TV applications. Phil Baxter, CEO CVP group, commented: “With features like a Super-35mm sensor, 50Mb/s and RAW recording capability, very high frame rates and a modular design, the new F5 and F55 cameras actively demonstrate that Sony have been listening to their customers requirements. The ability to seamlessly switch from HD to 4K acquisition further highlight the fact that these are probably the most versatile and future-proof digital cinema cameras to date.” Mike Thomas, sales director, Top-Teks commented: “The launch of Sony’s F5 and F55 opens the door for broadcast and drama productions to shoot in 4K; we will see demand quickly rise as the industry recognises the significant benefits in shooting in 4K for HD and 2K programming.”www.sony.co.uk
