Disney Plus tests livestreaming capabilities

Disney said the test was part of its "ongoing and iterative approach to deliver the best user experiences to consumers"

Disney Plus used yesterday’s Oscar nominees announcement to test the streaming service’s livestreaming capabilities.

In a statement, the company said: “We performed a test for live streaming capabilities on Disney Plus in the U.S. with [the] Academy Award nominations. We are pleased with the results and will continue to test as part of our ongoing and iterative approach to deliver the best user experiences to consumers.”

The test has led to speculation the streamer could be looking to launch new formats within its content – everything from livestreams of premiere red carpets to live sport.

The addition of live content would give Disney Plus an advantage over some of its competitors such as Netflix.

In the United States, Disney already offers live content on its Hulu and ESPN platforms.

Disney Plus reached 118.1 million subscribers in Q4 2021, up 2.1 million from the end of Q3. It is due to reveal its Q1 2022 subscriber numbers later today.

Last month, CEO Bob Chapek told Disney staff the company intends to focus on innovation and audience in 2022.
