Austrian broadcaster ORS develops special drone to check transmitter

ORS worked with German company ARGE Rundfunk-Betriebstechnik to develop the drone and technology required to check the mast

As part of the constant checks of its transmitters, Austrian broadcaster ORS has deployed a special drone at its major transmitter in Gaisberg near Salzburg.

The site at Gaisberg is one of 430 transmitters deployed across Austria by the broadcaster, and serves over half a million viewers.

ORS worked with German company ARGE Rundfunk-Betriebstechnik to develop the drone and technology required to check the mast.

Previously, there have been issues around using drones to check transmitters because of the large number of signals in the area. The technology developed by the two companies enables the drone to reach a height of 100 metres without interference.

“All measurement parameters of the transmitter system could be verified successfully,” said ORS project manager Martin Kubicek. “With this new method of measurement, we will be able to service many of our transmitter systems in the future.”

A video of the test (in German) is available on ORS’ website.
