Amazon ‘considering separate app for sport’

Company is said to view the launch of a standalone app as a way to generate revenue from its sports deals

Amazon is reportedly considering launching a separate app for its sport content.

According to The Information, the company views the standalone app as a better way of showcasing its sports content than the current Prime Video model.

The streaming company owns the rights to select Premier League matches in the UK and will share UEFA Champions League matches with BT Sport from the 2024/25 season. In the United States the streamer holds the rights to the NFL’s Thursday Night Football, and New York Yankees baseball games.

The report states there is no confirmation that Amazon will follow through on its plans, and could scrap them altogether. It adds that Amazon sees the launch of a standalone app as a way to generate revenue from its sports deals.

Last November, Amazon CEO Andy Jassey said he could see the company looking at “opportunities to make our Prime Video business a standalone business.”
