Reuters and TVU Networks ensure ‘capacity follows the story’

The latest phase in the collaboration enables infrastructure to adapt dynamically to meet the needs of a story, rather than the other way around

TVU Networks has announced the latest phase in its collaboration with Reuters, with a new operating model for scalable live workflows.

Built on the Reuters Live Service (RLS) cloud and IP distribution platform, the model aims to enable the organisation to dynamically combine processing, services and distribution capacity to meet the needs of each story.

Instead of relying on fixed live infrastructure, the new cloud-based, API-driven model ensures “capacity follows the story”, allowing RLS to scale capacity as news breaks and stories evolve.

Powered by TVU MediaHub and TVU NOC, the software-defined infrastructure improves signal quality and provides automated failover, disaster recovery and the facility to scale distribution to Reuters clients as demand grows.

Centred around TVU MediaMesh the latest development phase extends scalability to the live operation, combining TVU and third-party services within a single environment. Breaking news feeds can be frame-rate converted, watermarked and monitored for both live and file workflows.

TVU MediaMesh includes recently introduced tools, Build, Operate and Observe, designed to provide an environment for creating, running and monitoring news content while ensuring operators are shielded from the underlying technical complexity.

DPP Live Production Exchange (LPX) enables Reuters to link editorial decisions with technical workflows, with MediaMesh automatically activating services as required, minimising manual signal routing and infrastructure restrictions.

The architecture incorporates TAMS (Timeline-Addressable Media Store), EBU DMF (Dynamic Media Facility), EBU MXL (Media Exchange Layer) and DPP LPX, alongside TVU’s APIs and Global Shared Memory architecture, enabling Reuters to move away from fixed infrastructure without having to move into another closed technology environment. This aims to allow technology partners to contribute where they add value. InSync FrameFormer provides motion-compensated frame-rate conversion for destinations that require it, while Kinetiq Teletrax adds invisible watermarking to enable tracking and protection of Reuters’ content. 

Reuters is developing AI workflows to enable media analysis and metadata enrichment.

Joseph Delshadian, director of content distribution at Reuters, said, “For decades infrastructure dictated what we could distribute. That’s over. Now the story will decide.”
