What impact have the current global uncertainties had on AJA Video’s R&D and product development in recent months?
AJA’s R&D and product development continue to move full steam ahead, unaffected by global uncertainties. Our team is continually building and developing new tools designed to alleviate customer pain points as they navigate rapidly advancing technologies, such as IP and HDR. We’ll have more to share on that front as autumn rolls around.
Where do you see the most opportune areas for innovation in your area of the market, and what tech/solutions will drive that development?
The democratisation of content creation continues to be a huge market mover and topic of discussion at industry events ranging from HPA Tech Retreat to NAB and IBC. It’s easier and more cost-efficient than ever to capture high-quality media on a mobile phone today, with citizen journalism and the growing creator economy examples of what’s possible.
Even broadcasters are embracing less expensive camera systems because the quality is so good. As they do, colour management will come even more into focus, as these camera systems, while more cost-efficient, can’t match the colour space of a traditional, high-end broadcast camera. It’s an area we’re tracking closely and one where our video engineering expertise could serve the market.
AI and ML are also technologies we’re certainly exploring as innovations for both progress rapidly, posing new opportunities. There are numerous potential applications in the realm of metadata harvesting and video encoding, and we’ve already seen a few AI-based codecs emerge. While the quality these codecs can create for the type of video they’ve been trained on is impressive, the cost of decoding them can be cost-prohibitive.
Finally, hardware virtualisation has also caught our attention, offering opportunities for innovation that have yet to be fully explored.
What are you working on currently that excites you as a product team, and what can we expect to see at IBC2025?
There’s a lot we’re excited about, but we’re keeping the details under wraps for now. We’ll be revealing more as IBC draws closer.
