NRK chooses Nevion VideoIPath as broadcast control system

The solution aligns with the distributed nature of production envisaged by NRK through IP-based infrastructure

Norway’s NRK has chosen Nevion’s VideoIPath broadcast control system (BCS) as it continues its modernisation programme.

The Oslo-based public broadcaster centres its operations around four main production hubs throughout the country, and is aiming to increase focus on content creation and centralise equipment into data centres while expanding its presence and availability in regional locations.

NRK selected Sony Group company Nevion’s VideoIPath BCS to control its evolving broadcast operations. The company will also provide professional services to help deliver the transformation project, as the broadcaster looks to increase its ability to change.

Pål Nedregotten, CTO/CPO at NRK said: “We are effectively embarking on a business transformation process that also involves a rethinking of our production infrastructure. Our vision is about being nimbler and more cost-efficient in production of course, but also more sustainable – with less duplication of equipment and a better use of our resources. We were looking for partners who would share our vision and approach, and we found them in Nevion and Sony.”

The VideoIPath BCS is a key component of Sony’s Networked Live offering, used by broadcasters in a diverse variety of applications including remote production, OB trucks, contribution and GCCG (ground-to-cloud-cloud-to-ground). The solution aligns with the distributed nature of production envisaged by NRK through IP-based infrastructure, said the company.

“VideoIPath obviously has a well-deserved reputation as a premier network orchestration system, but this exciting project underlines the platform’s broadcast control capabilities. Our vision for these is not rooted in legacy, but forward-looking, and optimised for the new workflows enabled by IP, such as those envisioned by NRK,” said Thomas Heinzer, Nevion CEO.
