My IBC: Yasser Syed, President, Ultra HD Forum

At IBC2025, Yasser Syed is looking forward to seeing new display and delivery technologies and keeping track of the new trends appearing in the industry, including cloud processing, mixed reality, and AI assistance

How long have you been going to IBC?

We (the Ultra HD Forum) have had a technology showcase booth at IBC each year for the last eight years, and many of us in the Ultra HD Forum have been personally coming for many years before that. Even though I am based across the pond, I have been finding myself coming here fairly frequently.

What’s your typical IBC routine: what are you there to see/learn, who are you there to meet?

Typically, we get the booth set up, have a members’ breakfast with a lively discussion, and at times organise and participate in panels talking about Ultra HD formats and their deployment as a service. During the show, we talk with many people, including our members, about their UltraHD experiences and pains, and let them know they are not on their own and others have been working through it too. That is one of the reasons we put together the UltraHD guideline books to capture the collective experiences and knowledge (and bruises) acquired and share those learnings with the community.

Besides talking about UltraHD formats and services. I like coming to IBC to see all the new display and delivery technologies and keep track of the new trends appearing in the industry, ranging from cloud processing, mixed reality, to AI assistance.

Why is IBC important to you in a professional capacity, and how does the show compare to others on the calendar?

IBC offers a good cross-section of companies and people across the world. Services and products need to work on a global level, and understanding the different needs and wants out there is key to this. Plus, people are coming back from their holidays fresh and eager to converse!

What are you most looking forward to at IBC2025?

Running into industry colleagues I have not seen in a couple of years, and catching up both on a professional level and a personal level.

What’s your top tip for anyone attending IBC for the first time?

Get a place to stay early or you might be commuting to IBC. Start your day with good coffee at the UltraHD Forum’s booth too.
