Tiffen has released version 3.0 of its Dfx digital filter software, adding new optical effects and digital correction filters. There are also speed improvements, with multi-processor acceleration for faster interaction and image rendering, writes David Fox.

It has ten new filter selections for optical effects, such as DeBand, DeBlock and DeNoise to counter unwanted digital artefacts. A Film Stocks effect simulates 113 different film stocks. Stylised looks are provided by Colour Shadow, Glow Darks, Key Light, Rays and Texture, while Match picks up the colour, detail, gradient and tone of one image and applies it to another. There are also interface improvements, to make it easier to use.

Dfx v3 is available for Windows XP, Vista and 7, and Mac OS X 10.6x or later platforms. It can be supplied as a standalone package or as a plug-in for many popular broadcast applications. The Dfx v3 Video/Film Plug-in runs with Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid editing systems for one machine, while Dfx v3 Photo Plug-in is a licence for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Apple Aperture.

“With each update of the Tiffen Dfx digital filter suite we strive to push the boundaries of visual effects technology, enhancing our users’ creative experience and simplifying the interoperability between platforms and creative workflows,” said Steve Tiffen, President and CEO, The Tiffen Company.

“Many of our customers work in multiple mediums – from print, to video and film – and with more than one tool. The effortless compatibility and crossover capabilities of our software allow the artists’ to focus on the creative aspects of a project, rather than technical nuances.”
