Stofa catch up TV and live Vienna opera powered by Elemental

Danish pay TV operator Stofa is using Elemental Technologies’ video processing solutions to process, package and manage live linear channels in realtime for its catch-up TV and multiscreen video services.

Danish pay TV operator Stofa is using Elemental Technologies’ video processing solutions to process, package and manage live linear channels in realtime for its catch-up TV and multiscreen video services. The video infrastructure from Elemental customises 150 TV channels – including 38 in HD – for delivery to Stofa subscribers.

Stofa provides its broadband subscribers with a full range of multiscreen services, including StartForfa for catch-up TV and WebTV for viewing live content using Apple iOS and Google Android devices. The pay TV operator uses Elemental Live to transcode live linear TV channels, Elemental Stream to package that content for multiscreen delivery, and Elemental Conductor to manage multiple live streams across the network. The complete Elemental video processing solution is fully integrated within the Stofa broadcast workflow.

“Elemental provided us with a software-defined solution that enables us to respond quickly to changing market situations and customer demand,” said Thomas Helbo, chief technology officer for Stofa. “Due to the growing success of our multiscreen services, it is critical that we continually enhance our system to support new devices and video profiles as they come onto the market. The flexibility and scalability of the Elemental video platform allows us to do just that.”

Earlier this month, the Vienna State Opera broadcast Verdi’s Nabucco, starring Placido Domingo. It marked the first time that 4K video was streamed globally over the internet in a live production.

The Opera makes nearly all of its 2014/2015 season production available via the internet, smart TV and mobile devices. The Vienna Opera has developed its own Wiener Staatsoper Samsung smart TV app with fully integrated UHD playout functionality.

Elemental video processing was used to stream the event using, HEVC delivered via MPEG-DASH. The workflow for the event was designed by Austrian company ETAS High Tech Hardware Systems. Delivery of the 4K streams was managed by Ooyala.
