NAB News: EditShare is planning to release—for the first time—a free, open source version of its Lightworks non-linear editor, soon after NAB, writes Carolyn Giardina.
As a step toward its Open Source Initiative, in late 2010 the company launched a public beta of an upgraded Lightworks software. EditShare founder and president Andy Liebman reported that over 65,000 people downloaded the free, fully-functioning version.
“We are trying to build a very large and knowledgeable Lightworks community,” said Liebman. “Over 50,000 participated in a forum and are making constructive and useful comments about the software.” EditShare acquired Lightworks in August 2009.
Editor Tariq Anwar recently used Lightworks to cut multi-Oscar winner, The King’s Speech.
Liebman reported that EditShare has also “hit its stride in providing end to end tapeless workflows” using its existing products.
At NAB, EditShare is unveiling a new tapeless workflow for multi-camera TV productions by integrating its product lines. Geevs (ingest/playout), Flow (asset management), and Ark (archiving) manage the creation and movement of media across the production workflow with EditShare XStream at the core managing central storage and content access.
The company is also unveiling its new Energy shared storage product line. Designed for small and mid-size production workgroups, Editshare reported that the Energy series provides speed with over 700MB per second, read and write performance per server or expansion chassis. The Energy Series includes Avid and Final Cut Pro project sharing.
