Italy’s antitrust regulator has placed a three-year ban on Sky Italia from distributing exclusive content on its online platform.
The regulator said a proposed deal between the two companies would further limit competition in a market where Sky Italia is already a dominant player.
Last year Mediaset announced plans to sell its digital terrestrial pay-TV assets, known as R2, to Sky Italia as part of a broader content agreement between the two.
In April, the two companies announced they would partially cancel the sale, as they expected the regulator to set conditions to the deal.
However, the deal has now been given a conditional green light to the deal, with the regulator stating that the “partial return” of pay-TV assets to Mediaset was insufficient to level the playing field for online rivals.
