Facebook is potentially challenging YouTube over music video rights, allowing the social media platform to offer official music videos via Facebook Watch.
Facebook’s current deals with record companies enable users to include songs in the background of videos, but the company does not have the rights for official music videos.
According to a report from Bloomberg, the company is now negotiating new licensing deals with Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Music Group, and has reportedly begun testing music videos in Thailand and India.
Sources close to Facebook asserted that record companies “have long complained that YouTube doesn’t pay them enough” and “has been too loose with copyright protections.”
