Disney Plus to add IMAX-quality immersive sound in 2023

The “specially calibrated” audio ensures that “filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimised for an IMAX-quality presentation"

Disney Plus is adding support for enhanced IMAX signature sound by DTS to a selection of Marvel films and other titles in 2023.

Disney Streaming, is working with IMAX Corporation, and DTS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xperi Inc., to offer the enhanced immersive audio at some point this year (dates have not been yet been announced).

Audiences can already watch Disney Plus’ content in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, with a number of Marvel titles available in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio (1:90:1), which offers up to 26 per cent more picture for select sequences – meaning more of the action is visible on screen.

The companies said the “specially calibrated” audio will ensure that “filmmakers’ creative intent is fully optimised for an IMAX-quality presentation.”

Jerrell Jimerson, executive vice president of product, Disney Streaming said: “This unique collaboration extends our long-standing relationship between Disney and IMAX and we look forward to delivering this new immersive audio experience alongside premium playback quality for current and future titles to our audiences around the world.”
