Amazon ‘developing own smart TV’

Set is reportedly being developed alongside a group of Chinese manufacturers including Huawei

Amazon is reportedly working on its own 4K smart TV in its fight to secure more eyes on Amazon Prime.

According to the Telegraph, the smart TV is being developed alongside a group of Chinese manufacturers including Huawei, and is being confidentially tested by DTG, the industry body that maintains Britain’s digital terrestrial broadcast technical standards.

It’s thought the TV will include Freeview as well as Prime Video and Amazon Alexa.

According to the paper, Amazon has been unable to attract the main broadcasters to an online subscription streaming service. It’s also been unable to distribute Prime Video over pay-TV platforms such as Sky and Virgin Media, despite the latter offering Netflix over their set-top boxes.

The Telegraph quotes industry sources as saying the 4K TV from Amazon will be “aggressively priced” in order to attract a wider market for Amazon’s own exclusive content.
