How Telefónica teamed up with Huawei to build a new data centre

Telefónica Peru built a data centre in one of its existing Lima offices

Latin American broadcaster Telefonica has worked with Huawei to build a data centre to support cloud deployment for Telefonica Peru. The task for Telefonica Peru was to quickly build a high-quality, reliable data centre which could support the rapid development of cloud services and improve profitability.

In view of Huawei’s strong record of global data center experiences, cooperation locally and rich experience in delivering integrated projects in Peru, Telefonica decided to work with Huawei to ensure the successful delivery of this project. 

After analysing business needs and considering local conditions, Telefonica decided to transform an existing central office in the Lince district of Lima, Peru into a data centre. This method reused existing assets, reduced CAPEX, and shortened the construction period. 

The data center in Lima, Peru will cover a total floor area of 6000 square meters. It is being built in three phases and contains 584 IT cabinets with 2600 kW of total IT power. Huawei adopted its integration method of construction to ensure the overall progress and quality of the project. 

Telefonica uses the Uptime Tier III standard, which involves online maintenance and 99.98% availability. Aside from infrastructure requirements such as power supply, cooling, and diesel generator, it is also necessary to consider the layout of the existing building as well as other factors such as load bearing and reinforcement, all of which makes the design more difficult.

Huawei, considered the structure of the existing equipment room, then optimized the layout using 3D visual design tools, greatly improving space utilization. The data center of the first phase can house more than 100 cabinets, increasing the space utilization rate by about 50% compared with the 70 cabinets contained there before redevelopment.

During implementation, Huawei managed over 20 subcontractors and a total of over 120 construction workers, delivering eight systems, including power supply, HVAC, and cabling. In view of the tight schedule of the project and the complicated construction environment, Huawei optimised and verified the construction process to ensure the overall progress of the project. 

The first phase of the project was delivered within five months and passed acceptance at the first attempt, shortening the service rollout time by 15% and greatly increasing ROI. 

Currently, the Lince data center project has successfully obtained Uptime TIER III design certification. Multiple enterprises from financial, municipal, mass transit, and other industries are interested in joining the Lince data center because of its high reliability.

The completion of the Lince data center has laid an important foundation for Telefonica’s cloud service development and ICT transformation in Peru.
