Quantel has introduced Marco, a software-only product that takes enables users to run its sQ editing software on any desktop or laptop PC, writes George Jarrett. The Marco toolset comes on a disc, with video input and output from camcorders being a simple matter of using Firewire.

Any media files can be exported from Marco for delivery by store-and-forward and other base return applications.

“Since its inception, the Quantel edit interface has been widely accepted by both editors and journalists,’ said broadcast product manager, John Woodhouse. “Marco is easy to learn, is scalable, and provides a professional, uncluttered approach for creating news and sports packages.

“Users can now use these powerful editing capabilities in locations which are remote from the main sQ system, for example in remote news bureaux or in the field for laptop-based reporting,” added Woodhouse. “The common editing interface also brings huge operational and training advantages.”

The bare interface comes with several options, such as dissolves, wipes and custom transitions. Quantel’s One Shot effects package will add white balance, lift, gain and gamma, size, and blur/mosaic tracking. The new Templating option – instant working with live video – completes any package requirement for text and graphics.

In other Quantel news, Cinecitt_ Digital, part of the world-renowned Cinecitt_ Studios in Rome, has purchased a Quantel Pablo 4k next-generation, nonlinear colour correction system.

“Pablo is an incredibly versatile system, ideally suited to be the hub of our DI operation,” said Fabio Filoni, Cinecitt_ Digital’s facilities manager. “Conversions from data formats to video, down-conversions to HD or SD masters, international mastering, titling, managing externally created graphics, editing and compositing in every format up to 4k – whatever the task, the Pablo handles it with ease, integrating and complementing all the other systems in our facility. In this, Quantel simply has no real competitors.

“With the Pablo, we can now complete an average feature film colour correction in just five days without any compromises. The Pablo will also help us make inroads into the HD post business, and with the increasing use of digital capture this is a rapidly growing business opportunity.”
