Reflecting in real dollars all the interest in 3D in Amsterdam, Los Angeles-based 3D company PACE placed an order for Quantel’s Pablo with realtime 3D capabilities during IBC, writes Carolyn Giardina.
3D pioneer and company owner Vince Pace-who co-developed the Fusion 3D camera system with Academy Award winning director James Cameron-contributed to the development of Quantel’s 3D post technology, which is also available in iQ4 and MAX 4k, as well as a new 3D system called Sid.
“It’s the right platform,” Pace said. “I’ve used it and it’s been successful.”
Pace believes a rollout of digital 3D is on schedule. “People are taking it seriously,” he said. “Studios, the hardware suppliers, camera suppliers, everything we need to make it work. Exhibitors are rolling out as much as they can.”
Animated films such as ‘Chicken Little’ and ‘Monster House’ have made up the majority of the 3D digital releases so far. Pace predicted that in 2008, the industry would start to see live action productions, as well as the marriage of CG and live action. He expects to begin to see films of this type released in 2009.
PACE and the NBA’s ‘2007 All-Star Game’ live in 3D was short listed for an IBC Innovation Award.
